Vizzina Remains the Favorite, But Clemson's QB History Offers Another Clue
Clemson has yet to publicly name its starting quarterback for the 2026 season opener at LSU, but the latest reporting suggests Christopher Vizzina remains in front of freshman Tait Reynolds.
CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz reported Thursday, citing sources, that Vizzina “continues to be the favorite” in Clemson's quarterback competition.
That would be consistent with where the competition stood entering fall camp. Vizzina came out of the spring in front, while Reynolds emerged as a legitimate challenger for the job.
Vizzina also owns the experience advantage.
The senior made his first career start against SMU last season, completing 29 of 42 passes for 317 yards and three touchdowns without an interception.
The larger question may be whether Clemson ultimately settles on one quarterback against LSU or finds an opportunity to get Reynolds on the field as well.
Longtime former Clemson sports information director Tim Bourret recently joined me on our daily radio show and offered his own thoughts on how the situation might unfold.
“I definitely think Vizzina is ahead because of his experience,” Bourret noted. “I’d think Vizzina is going to be the starter.”
Even so, Bourret could envision a scenario in which Reynolds sees action.
“It would make sense to put Reynolds in and get his feet wet because, you know, things can happen with injuries or whatever,” Bourret said. “So I would think they might want to get him some playing time, just to get him some experience.”
Doing that in Baton Rouge, however, presents an obvious challenge for a freshman making his college debut.
Bourret pointed to Clemson's own quarterback history while discussing the potential risk and reward of putting a young player into that environment.
He recalled the difficult opening experiences of D.J. Uiagalelei and Cade Klubnik against Georgia in 2021 and 2024, and contrasted them with Trevor Lawrence's debut against Furman in 2018, when the freshman threw three touchdown passes.
“What could be a tougher venue for a guy to play in?” Bourret said of LSU’s Tiger Stadium environment.
Bourret also cautioned against assuming Clemson would use a predetermined quarterback rotation. If Vizzina starts and establishes a rhythm, the circumstances of the game could dictate whether Reynolds gets an opportunity.
“If there was a plan to bring him in and Vizzina was doing really well, I don't know that it would happen,” Bourret said. “If a guy's got a rhythm going, you don't want to destroy that.”
For now, Clemson has made no official announcement about who will take the first snap against LSU. But a look back at Chad Morris’ first tenure at Clemson offers an interesting parallel.
During Morris’ meeting with the media at The Reserve at Lake Keowee in 2014, he was asked about freshman Deshaun Watson and whether he would see the field in Clemson’s season opener at Georgia.
“He's going to play this year. He's going to play at Georgia. Now what's his role – how limited it is – that's to be determined,” Morris said at the time.
Twelve years later, Clemson enters another season opener on the road against an SEC opponent with an experienced quarterback seemingly holding the edge and a talented freshman pushing for playing time.
That doesn't mean Morris and the Tigers will follow the same script with Reynolds. For now, Zenitz's reporting provides the strongest indication that Vizzina remains the favorite to start, while Bourret's assessment offers one possible way Clemson could handle the position once the game begins.
Ultimately, Bourret believes whether Reynolds sees the field could depend less on a predetermined rotation and more on how the game unfolds.
“I think it's going to be kind of a game-time situation based on how the game goes,” Bourret said.
