Keys to Victory: Clemson vs. Georgia Southern

The Stakes:

What have you done for me lately?

For Clemson, the answer isn't pretty.

The Tigers return to Death Valley one week after suffering a 51-10 loss at No. 11 LSU, the largest defeat of the Dabo Swinney era. LSU piled up 644 yards of offense, including 309 on the ground, while holding Clemson to only 145 total yards.

Now comes the response.

Georgia Southern isn't LSU, and no matter what Clemson does Saturday night, beating the Eagles won't erase what happened in Baton Rouge. But an impressive performance can begin changing the conversation.

Two years ago, Clemson followed a 34-3 season-opening loss to Georgia by blasting Appalachian State, 66-20, and ultimately went on to win 10 games, capture the ACC Championship, and earn a spot in the College Football Playoff.

That's the kind of response Clemson needs tonight.

The only previous meeting came during Clemson's 2018 national championship season. The second-ranked Tigers produced 595 yards of offense in a 38-7 victory in Death Valley.

Travis Etienne rushed for 162 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries, while freshman Justyn Ross caught three passes for 103 yards and a touchdown. Clemson's defense held Georgia Southern scoreless through three quarters and allowed only 30 yards in the first half.

Tim Bourret’s Perspective:

Longtime Clemson SID Tim Bourret didn't expect what unfolded in Baton Rouge, especially the 41-point margin.

“I didn't think they had a chance to beat us by multiple touchdowns. Because I look at the intangible aspects of things, and they had every intangible thing going in their favor. But that's not an excuse to lose by that type of margin.”

Bourret pointed specifically to LSU's talent and its work in the transfer portal, particularly along the offensive line, while noting that Clemson should benefit from getting Collin Sadler back this week.

Bourret also came away from Baton Rouge unwilling to make sweeping judgments about Clemson's quarterback situation after Christopher Vizzina and Tait Reynolds combined for only 22 passing attempts.

“I don't think you saw enough plays for either quarterback to really make a determination of their performance, and we know the offensive line did not do well. So I think this weekend is going to be a bigger barometer.”

The Number That Matters:

100. Clemson enters Saturday with a 99-18-8 record in home openers and can record the 100th home-opening victory in program history.

The Tigers are 36-3 in home openers since 1987 and had won a school-record 21 consecutive home openers from 2004-24 before LSU ended that streak last season.

Fun Fact:

Saturday night's game will be Clemson's first-ever “Stripe the Valley” game, with fans in Memorial Stadium participating in color-coordinated sections.

It's also Football Reunion Day and Hall of Fame Day. Clemson will recognize the 1976 team on its 50th anniversary, the 2001 team on its 25th, the 2016 national championship team on its 10th and the 2021 squad on its fifth.

Swanny's Rant & Reality Check:

“If you go out there this weekend and win against Georgia Southern, the echoes of the LSU loss will diminish quite a bit. And if you go out there and you look really good, then the questions will become, Okay, how great is LSU? I know you didn't learn much from Clemson and Georgia Southern, but how great is LSU? And maybe Clemson's not as bad as we thought.

Now you go out there and you, as I said on Tuesday, you Michigan vs. Western Michigan this thing? Then maybe showing up on Monday is not good.

I believe some of the things we talked about with Shaq Lawson earlier, Clemson winning at the line of scrimmage more often than not, much like LSU won at the line of scrimmage. That's where games are won and lost.

LSU's got better Jimmys and Joes. They're bigger, faster, stronger. Clemson should be bigger, faster, stronger this weekend.

If the Tigers don't win this game against Georgia Southern, color me absolutely stunned when we roll in here next week.”

Three Things That Decide It:

1. Take Back the Line of Scrimmage

There's really no way to sugarcoat what happened in Baton Rouge. LSU ran for 309 yards while Clemson managed only 40. The Tigers were beaten at the point of attack on both sides of the football.

That has to change Saturday.

As Bourret noted, getting Collin Sadler back should help stabilize an offensive line that struggled mightily against LSU.

Defensively, Clemson's problems are more complicated. Marcus Strong is expected to miss significant time, and Vic Burley won't return from suspension until the North Carolina game to a unit that's already thin. 

This isn't just about winning Saturday. Clemson needs to show that what LSU did on the ground isn't going to become a blueprint for everyone else on the schedule. 

2. Christopher Vizzina Needs to Look Like QB1

I actually thought one of the few positives against LSU was that the moment never appeared too big for Vizzina.

His numbers weren't impressive — 10-of-16 for 83 yards with an interception — but he was playing behind an offensive line that gave him very little help. Even after the interception that helped LSU take control of the game, I never thought he looked rattled.

Now Clemson needs more.

This week should help clarify exactly what Clemson has at quarterback. If Vizzina is the unquestioned starter and Reynolds is the backup Clemson wants to develop, then Vizzina should command the offense, move the football and get the Tigers into the end zone before Reynolds receives meaningful snaps.

If we're still debating the quarterback position Monday morning because the two played at essentially the same level, that's a different conversation — and probably not a good one for Clemson.

3. Get Everybody Involved

If Clemson plays the way it should, this needs to become a developmental game in the second half.

The Tigers have plenty to clean up after Baton Rouge, but they also need to build a roster capable of handling what comes later. That means getting young offensive linemen meaningful snaps, developing depth on a depleted defensive front and giving Reynolds valuable game experience behind Vizzina.

It's also an opportunity for Chad Morris to get his offense into a rhythm. Clemson has too much talent at wide receiver to finish games with 105 passing yards. The Tigers need to create explosive plays, establish confidence and let those playmakers remind everybody why there was optimism surrounding this offense entering the season.

If Clemson can put this game away early, the fourth quarter shouldn't be about survival. It should be about development.

What Worries Me:

Honestly, it's not really Georgia Southern.

It's Clemson.

How much of what happened in Baton Rouge was LSU simply being significantly better, and how much exposed legitimate problems that are going to follow Clemson throughout the season?

The defensive line is thin. The offensive line was overwhelmed. Clemson produced only 145 yards of offense and surrendered 644. Those aren't numbers you simply dismiss because the opponent changes.

Georgia Southern provides Clemson an opportunity to prove that LSU was an awful night against a really talented football team rather than the beginning of a larger trend.

If Clemson controls the line of scrimmage, Vizzina plays well and the Tigers build a comfortable enough lead to get Reynolds and the backups meaningful snaps, everybody can exhale a little.

Prediction:

I don't think Clemson loses this football game.

The question for me is whether Clemson looks like Clemson again.

The talent disparity that worked against the Tigers in Baton Rouge should work in their favor in Death Valley. Clemson should control the line of scrimmage more often than not, and I expect Morris' offense to move the football significantly better than it did against LSU.

The quarterback situation is also worth watching. If Vizzina is truly Clemson's No. 1 and Reynolds is being prepared as the backup, this feels like a game in which Vizzina should establish control early and give the coaching staff an opportunity to get Reynolds valuable snaps later.

That's ultimately what I'm expecting.

Clemson isn't at a point where I'm ready to predict a 50-point explosion after what we saw last week, but I think the Tigers look considerably better, put LSU in the rearview mirror and get their first win of 2026.

And on a personal note, good luck to Georgia Southern kicker Tripp Bryant, a friend of our family. Hopefully, he gets an opportunity to kick in Death Valley and comes away with a memory he'll never forget.
