Dabo Swinney said Tuesday that Christopher Vizzina’s arm injury changed how Clemson’s quarterback competition unfolded, explaining that the battle would have continued had the veteran remained healthy.

Tait Reynolds remains the starter. But Swinney’s explanation added another layer to a decision he described in September as a promotion earned through performance.

“I think it definitely would have been a battle, because again, CV was going back in the game,” Swinney said.

The question came after Swinney acknowledged Clemson’s offense had fallen short of the staff’s expectations. He said the Tigers anticipated having more of a veteran presence at quarterback before Vizzina was injured against Georgia Southern.

Clemson intended to give each quarterback three series in that game, Swinney said. When the staff tried to return to Vizzina, he could not play.

“We were going three and three,” Swinney said. “We went to put CV back in, he couldn’t play, he couldn’t feel his arm.”

Reynolds received the extended opportunity, then prepared for his first start against North Carolina and a road trip to California while Vizzina’s injury limited his practice work.

“But my point is, we thought we would have both of those guys, and it would be a little different process as we’ve gone,” Swinney said. “Then it would maybe happen in a different way.”

“Either CV really solidifies himself, or Tait keeps coming, or vice versa. We were kind of forced into the situation we were in.”

That emphasis differs from how Swinney publicly framed the decision Sept. 15, when he said Reynolds had moved ahead based on what Clemson had seen in its first two games.

“Tait has passed him, and he’s won the job,” Swinney said then.

At the time, Swinney described the change as a performance decision and said Vizzina should be available if needed against North Carolina.

Tuesday, he emphasized how limited Vizzina had been, describing him as an emergency option who could barely practice during that stretch.

Those explanations address different parts of the situation: Reynolds’ performance during his opportunity and the injury that kept Vizzina off the field. They also leave open the question of how the staff weighed each factor when committing to the freshman.

The distinction matters now because Vizzina is closer to full health, while Clemson is still searching for consistent offensive production after Saturday’s 20-16 loss to Virginia Tech.

Not to mention Reynolds’ struggles with the zone-read against Virginia Tech add another layer to that discussion. Swinney said Clemson leaned more on designed quarterback runs after halftime to get the freshman going, though reads remained part of the offense.

That raises a question beyond Clemson’s lack of downfield production: Could a more experienced quarterback have helped the Tigers execute the running game more effectively?

That doesn’t mean Vizzina would have delivered a different result. But if missed reads are costing Clemson opportunities, experience should factor into the evaluation alongside Reynolds’ potential.

Asked whether Vizzina could push Reynolds as his health improves, Swinney said it was good to have him back where he could compete.

“Everybody’s got a job to do, but Tait’s the starter, he’s earned that opportunity,” Swinney said. “He’s done a lot of good things, but he’s got to go play well.”

Swinney said Vizzina still wasn’t fully healthy but was closer to being fully healthy than he'd been since the injury.

Reynolds has the job. The question is what happens if Clemson’s offense stalls again in Tallahassee. With Vizzina increasingly available, what would it take for Swinney to give him an opportunity?

Tuesday’s explanation clarified how Clemson arrived at this point. It left the standard for making another change less clear.
