A statistical look at the Clemson Regional which begins Friday in Clemson.

First, a look at the resumes:

Team Seed Record RPI SOS vs. 1-50 vs. 51-100 vs. 101+
Clemson 1 45-14 11 34 10-10 15-3 20-1
Vanderbilt 2 31-25 38 7 18-17 4-3 9-5
St. John's 3 39-15 27 105 3-5 7-5 29-5
Morehead State 4 36-24 96 180 3-5 2-2 31-17

Looking at the team profiles, a few things stand out.

  • While Clemson's power has been celebrated all season, Morehead State isn't far behind the Tigers having bashed their way through the Ohio Valley Conference, batting .317 with 81 home runs (1.36 per game).
  • Morehead's ERA stands out, too, but not for the right reasons.
  • Vanderbilt's numbers are similar to Clemson's and they've played a tougher schedule.
  • St. John's (Big East) has strong pitching numbers, but their strength of schedule is 100+.
Team Batting OBP SLG ERA WHIP FLDG
Clemson .261 .379 .455 3.36 1.27 .975
Vanderbilt .264 .372 .411 4.17 1.33 .983
St. John's .297 .371 .437 2.95 1.17 .974
Morehead State .317 .409 .404 5.89 1.62 .968

It appears to be a competitive regional, with the winner earning a trip to Tallahassee, assuming the Seminoles take care of business.

On the surface, it appears the road to Omaha got a little bit tougher over the last few days, but I have full confidence Monte Lee and staff will have the Tigers ready to play come Friday.
