Clemson Hosts Lander in Exhibition Play
CLEMSON, S.C. - The Clemson women’s basketball team takes the court for the first time this season when it hosts Lander at 2 p.m. on Sunday for the first of two exhibition games. Fans are invited to Littlejohn to get their first look at the 2018-19 Tigers under new head coach Amanda Butler. Admission to both exhibition games is free.
The Tigers return seven players from a season ago, including leading scorer Kobi Thornton, who averaged 11.1 points per game in 2017-18. Clemson welcomes six new faces - three freshmen and three transfers - to round out the squad of 13. Graduate transfer Simone Westbrook joins the program from Florida as the only current Tiger to have played under Coach Butler.
Clemson faces off with Lander for just the third time in program history. The Tigers hold the 2-0 edge over the Bearcats, emerging victorious, 94-50, in the last meeting between the two programs on Feb. 13, 1978, a home game for Clemson. Lander head coach Kevin Pederson has Clemson roots having worked as a manager for the men’s basketball team for five seasons before graduating from Clemson in 1999.
The Tigers roll into the 2018-19 season with a top-notch defense from a season ago. Clemson held opponents to 60.3 points per game, ranking fifth in the ACC in both scoring defense and field goal percentage defense. Danielle Edwards sat second in the ACC in steals, averaging 2.6 steals per game during the 2017-18 season. She is just 34 steals from sneaking into the top five in program history for career steals.
All single game tickets are on sale for adult and youth/seniors at $6 and $4, respectively. Children 12 and under are free. Single-game and season tickets can be purchased online or at 1-800-CLEMSON. All seats for women’s basketball are general admission.
