Clemson beats Alabama...again...in FPI preseason rankings

The  Clemson Tigers have topped the Crimson Tide once again. Despite losing its top defenders to the NFL last year, Clemson Football made it a point to show that its offense, led by then-true freshman Trevor Lawrence, had some “Power Rangers” of its own, allowing them to retain the number one spot in the Football Power Index preseason rankings for the second year in a row.

To give a quick refresher to or inform those who haven’t heard of this rating and ranking system, the FPI is a tool used by ESPN to evaluate who the teams to watch next season will be. The FPI is based off of a team’s returning starters, whether they have a returning head coach, as well as the team’s performance and recruiting rankings for the past four seasons.

To further back up the team’s well-deserved placement, Clemson has also proven to be the premier team in its conference. The Tigers have consistently outscored its fellow ACC members by at least 17 points per game. In addition, Clemson is one of two teams in the top 5 rankings that aren’t part of the SEC, the dominating conference.

However, players, staff, and fans should still sleep with one eye open, according to ESPN. Seth Walder of ESPN Analytics, said: “…it's still Clemson and Alabama and then everyone else. The difference in rating between No. 2-ranked Alabama (plus-27.6) and No. 3-ranked Georgia (plus-22.0) is the same as the Bulldogs' advantage over 10th-ranked Oregon (plus-16.4). Clemson ranks first in offense and second in defense; Alabama is vice versa.”
