Dabo Swinney wanted to make two things clear after Clemson’s practice on Wednesday night:

  1. Trevor Lawrence is fine. There’s nothing wrong with him.
  2. There isn’t any drama on Clemson’s football team.

Larry Williams of Tigerillustrated.com reported Tuesday night that Trevor Lawrence had an MRI on his shoulder on a bruise that he got on a hit during the Texas A&M game. The Clemson quarterback said he’s been wearing something on his shoulder to cover up the bruise so it does not get hit again.

Swinney was asked on Wednesday night if he could confirm that Lawrence had an MRI on his shoulder. His full response below:

“No, I’m not confirming any of that. And I don’t want anybody texting anymore. I had a media guy text me the other night about it. That’s private information. That’s private information. If I want anybody to know our medical stuff, I’ll tell you. We’ll put it on the injury report.

“People texting me on my phone and asking me for information that’s not public information that I wouldn’t put out unless it was something that needed to be put out, that’s bad business. That’s not how we do things.

“There’s nothing wrong with Trevor, and I don’t like people creating drama. There’s no drama on this team, so what do people want to do? Create drama. It’s the most unbelievable thing. There’s no drama. There ain’t nothing wrong with Trevor. Zero. Nothing. If we did an MRI or we didn’t, that ain’t nobody’s business.

“We do MRIs all the time. All the time… A guy gets a bruise on his knee, we do an MRI. A guy bruises his elbow, we do an MRI. It drives me crazy. There’s no drama on this team so people want to create some. ‘Oh, Trevor missed a throw, he must be hurt.’ No, he’s human. He’s human.

“So here’s what I’m confirming: Trevor Lawrence is a great football player and a great leader and there ain’t nothing wrong him. People creating stuff, whether he had one or - what does that mean? That means nothing. He had a bruise. He had a bruise. If there was something wrong with him, would we be running him on the goal line? He’s run great. There ain’t nothing wrong with him.

“If he missed a throw, it’s because he missed a throw. Period. If he made a mental mistake, he made a mental mistake. There’s nothing wrong with him. People just need to relax. He’s a human. He’s met every expectation. We’re 5-0 and he’s done a great job. Throwing for more yards per game than we were last year at this time. Scoring more points than we did last year. I think our third-down percentage it higher.

“I’m not getting into medical information that I don’t put out there, especially something that he gets a bruise in the Texas A&M game. Ain’t nothing wrong with him. Nothing. Zero. He had his best game at Syracuse. Ain’t nothing wrong with him. So all the drama that people create - I’m hot about this because I got a text last night at home and I was pissed about it. ‘Oh my God, there's some conspiracy going on.’ No, I tell y’all the truth. I’m trying to be transparent and honest. If there was something wrong with him, I would let y’all know. There’s nothing wrong with him. Zero. Nothing. So people need to get over themselves and quit creating drama when there is none. Zero. It drives me crazy. I’ve been mad about it since last night.”

Lawrence has completed 61.3 percent of his passes and has thrown for 1,131 yards, eight touchdowns, and five interceptions. Swinney was even asked after the North Carolina game where his sophomore quarterback rushed the ball for a career-high 11 times if Lawrence was 100-percent healthy after taking plenty of hits already in 2019.

“Oh yeah, it’s football. I mean this ain’t two-hand touch. You’re gonna get hit. He’s great,” Swinney said. “He didn’t get touched last week (against Charlotte). He didn’t even break a sweat. Nobody touched him. I don’t even think he got a grass stain on him. So yeah, he’s in great shape. He took a few licks tonight, but that’s just the way it is. He ain’t in a bubble.”

Lawrence has also said multiple times that he’s been “fine” and the injury has not thrown off his mechanics. Lawrence also has four rushing touchdowns on 22 rushing attempts on the season.

He’ll face a Florida State team on Saturday that allowed him to throw for 314 yards and four touchdowns in 2018.
