DRAFT NOTES. It’s safe to say that the NFL Draft didn't go as planned for several Clemson Tigers, most notably Justyn Ross and Mario Goodrich. While Andrew Booth (Second Round, No. 42 overall, Minnesota) and Baylon Spector (Seventh Round, No. 231 overall, Buffalo) were taken, two players I fully expected to go, Ross and Goodrich, were left out of the seven-round NFL Draft.

Goodrich not being selected comes as a big surprise given how well he played this past season, but truth be told his reported $217,000 deal is better than most late-round selections receive. Goodrich will make a run at the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles.

According to NBCSports.com, it’s the richest deal the Eagles have ever given an undrafted ffree agent:

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, quoting Goodrich’s agents, reported that the Eagles gave Goodrich a $217,000 bonus to sign here.

That’s the largest bonus they’ve ever given an undrafted free agent.

According to the rookie wage scale, $217,000 is more than anybody drafted in the sixth or seventh is slotted to receive this year in guaranteed money.

As for Ross, if you listen to my radio show, you know I think he has elite talent, but the 2021 campaign didn't allow the Phenix City, Alabama native an opportunity to show that he was back to form after a congenital neck issue forced him to sit out the 2020 season.

Had Ross decided to play another year in Clemson, perhaps his name would have been called during the draft, but now he will have to try and catch on with a free-agent deal. I hate to see it, but here’s hoping it all works out for the talented wideout.

SLUGGED IN LOUISVILLE.  Clemson’s weekend in Louisville didn’t go as planned as the Tigers were swept in the three-game series against the Cardinals. If possible, the Tigers needed to win two out of three, but now drop to 6-14 in ACC play. It’s going to be tough at this point for the Tigers to make it to the ACC Tournament, but as Tim Bourret noted on the show last week, teams have missed their conference tournament in the past but still made the postseason.

As for Max Wagner, he continues to light it up at the plate. In Sunday’s 18-15 loss, Wagner belted a three-run homer in the third inning to extend his hitting streak to 12 games, then he crushed a two-run homer in the ninth inning. Wagner now has 21 home runs on the season.

100 FOR RITTMAN. It only took 130 games for Clemson Softball to win 100 games under head coach John Rittman. The Tigers secured their 100th win all-time with a walk-off win over Georgia Tech on Sunday. Freshman Maddie Moore hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning to score Alia Logoleo and give No. 18/17 Clemson the sweep over Georgia Tech in their final regular-season game.

The Tigers finished the regular-season 37-14 and 14-10 in the ACC. Clemson will find out their seeding for the 2022 ACC Softball Championships next weekend.

The ACC Championships will take place in Pittsburgh, Pa. at Vartabedian Field from May 11-14.

SONG OF THE DAY. In honor of it being May, it seems only fitting that this is our choice for today as the meme is everywhere recently.

OFF THE PATH

Chances are, if you were born at any point during or after the year 1993, you’ve probably heard the name “Jack Harlow” at least once. You may not know exactly who he is (or why that name is so prominent) but it’s unlikely your pop culture radar is broken enough for Harlow’s name not to sound familiar in the slightest.

NBA referees Scott Foster (age 55) and Ed Malloy (age 41) can’t say the same.

During a break in Sunday afternoon’s Bucks-Celtics playoff game, the two officials were caught by hot mics hilariously questioning who the rapper was while Harlow sat courtside in Boston.

Harlow’s new album releases on May 6, so hopefully Foster and Malloy have some free time on their flights home to get up to speed.
