Clemson expected to name Michigan's Erik Bakich as next head baseball coach

Clemson University Director of Athletics Graham Neff is expected to name Erik Bakich as the head coach of the school's baseball program. Bakich becomes just the 4th Clemson baseball coach since 1958 following the lengthy tenures of Bill Wilhelm (1958-1993) and Jack Leggett (1994-2015), and Monte Lee’s seven-year run in Tiger Town.

Bakich, 44, comes to Clemson after spending the ten seasons as the baseball coach at the University of Michigan. Prior to that, Bakich was the head coach at Maryland from 2010-2012.

During his 10 seasons at Michigan, Bakich was 328-216, winning two Big Ten Tournament titles and making five trips to the NCAA Regionals, including a runner-up finish at the 2019 College World Series.

Bakich was named D1Baseball’s Coach of the Year in 2019 and he also received the 2019 Skip Bertman Award.

When Bakich took over at Michigan, he was the youngest head baseball coach at any Power 5 School.

Bakich also served as an assistant at Clemson under Jack Leggett in 2002 before leaving to go to Vanderbilt with Tim Corbin. Bakich worked as the Tigers’ hitting coach, and with both infielders and outfielders. Clemson advanced to the College World Series that season.
