Advanced Metrics - Alabama 24, Clemson 6

From the very beginning, Alabama dominated Clemson in almost every way imaginable and the numbers below don't capture the full extent of the Crimson Tide dominance or the nature and tone of the game.

At the half, the Tigers had totaled only 73 yards on 26 offensive plays, but somehow Brent Venables crew had kept Clemson in the game.

Clemson recovered and suddenly found themselves 20 yards away from a tie game.

A potentially huge momentum shift occurred early in the third period as Alabama fumbled on the first play from scrimmage, Clemson recovered and suddenly found themselves 20 yards away from a tie game.

It was not to be as the Crimson Tide defense wreaked more havoc and the Tigers went backwards before settling for an Alex Spence field goal.

Alabama took a seemingly insurmountable 17-6 lead after converting the first of two interceptions into points.  That lead lasted exactly a kickoff, and a deflected pass turned pick-6 and with 5:27 to go in the third quarter the scoring was done and so was Clemson.

Clemson
Metric Alabama
70 PLAYS 66
188 TOTAL OFFENSE 261
2.7 YARDS PER PLAY 4.0
5.7 EXPLOSIVE PLAY % 3.0
42.1 3RD DOWN % 47.1
1.5 POINTS/DRIVE INSIDE 40 2.8
2 TURNOVERS 1
7.6 TACKLES FOR LOSS % 12.9
3.0 SACK % 7.1
27:49 TIME OF POSSESSION 32:11

On the evening Clemson had 13 total drives and only four times did they possess the ball inside the Alabama 40, and one of those was a gift. The Tiger offense had four 3 and outs, five if you count the three plays and a field goal after the Crimson Tide turnover to start the second half. Five drives gained 0 or lost yardage.

It was not pretty.

Last year was Clemson's time, this year it's someone else's. Games like this help me appreciate January 9th, 2017 more.

An 18 play, 75-yard drive that ultimately ended in frustration for Clemson made the game marginally statistically closer, but this game was over for all intents and purposes once Alabama went up by 11.

The last 357 days have been an incredible time to be a Clemson fan and in some ways has seemed like one extended commercial for the Tigers and Dabo Swinney.

Last year was Clemson's time, this year it's someone else's. Games like this help me appreciate January 9th, 2017 more.

The best is yet to come.

This game was upsetting on so many levels.
1) Biggest disappointment was Bama was getting pressure with 4 at most 5 guys most of the night and KB2 had NO time to throw the ball. This made for a LONG night (and I mean LOOOOONG.)
2) Dropped passes.....No need to elaborate and point fingers......
3) Not capitalizing on opportunities. When we recovered the fumble at the beginning of the 3rd, if we would have capitalized with a TD it could have been a different game. However see #1.....
4) LACK OF OFFICIATING!!!!! This KILLED US. Missed targeting on ETN, Missed targeting on O'Daniel, KB2 took a knee to the head after a run, countless no calls for blatant holds and OMG the mugging on our receivers. It was as if we were playing BAMA and the guys in black and white.

Still love my Tigers! Great Season, better than most projected, regroup and get right back to it!!! GO TIGERS!!!!

It was tough to watch the O-line get dismantled like that. We haven't seen them look like that in a long time. I simply credit Alabama for a great performance. They played a clean game and outside of the fumble, never really shot themselves in the foot. The same can't be said for Clemson.

Once the Tigers couldn't score a TD (even went backwards) after the fumble recovery I was disheartened. It felt very much like Clemson-Alabama circa 2008, albeit with a much better defense for Clemson.

Yea, this game really tore my nerves up....Was not expecting anything close to what we witnessed. I really had this game going either way but close nonetheless. The inability to slow down the Bama front 4 was really the undoing of our Tigers. This is the first time in years I went to sleep sick to my stomach after watching a Clemson football game. It was like watching a loved one get beat without the ability to do anything to stop it. I have confidence that Dabo and company will rally the boys and have us in good shape to make a run to the playoffs again next year.
The one silver lining to this dismantling is that it may serve as a fire in the hearts of some of our talented Juniors that are on the bubble to forgo the NFL draft and come back to seek "Revenge"

The numbers make it look better than it was. Who would have thought that?
