Opening Statement:

“Not very tough elements out there today. To be great you gotta have a little luck along the way-- and they’re off to a good start. They’ve gotten a little lucky in camp. As coaches, you don’t like it. Our last full scrimmage-- that’s it. You get some other days-- we will have a few live plays, but that’s pretty much it from a live standpoint-- as far as to the ground.”

“We always practice fast and physical on Tuesdays and Wednesdays of game week, but it’s all to the thud. You try to stay on your feet.”

“I thought we got better in some areas today. I thought our defense responded. I was very disappointed in our overtime period defensively-- and offensively. We mixed it up all day.”

On how the second scrimmage went:

“Good day. Got done what we needed to get done. I don’t think anybody got hurt. We had some guys that we put on a ‘pitch count’ today and some guys we held, but we are trending in a good spot. There ain’t but one way to get ready and you just gotta go play.”

On where the team is health-wise:

“I really like where the team is health-wise. Two guys out, Myles Oliver and then Troy Stellato. Xavier Thomas is doing great. Other than that everybody is in a good spot. It’s as healthy as we’ve been in a long time.”

On where the team is ahead of the opener:

“I’m starting to feel pretty good about where we are headed into next week. When they come back in here on Sunday, we are going to start doing some opponent prep. We put a couple of days in on Furman because we get back here-- we play Labor Day night-- we roll in here about 4:30 in the morning. You wake up the next day it’s Tuesday-- and we play Saturday. We really need to prepare the team so that when we come in on Tuesday, they are not starting from ground zero.”

On the situation at defensive end:

“We got four starters at defensive end. That’s why we don’t put a depth chart out. I don’t care who runs out there. We are fortunate that we have depth there. XT, KJ, Mascoll, Myles-- they’re all starters at the position. We’ve got three starters still-- just kind of knocks our depth down.”

On the quarterbacks:

“I think they both did some really good things. They both missed a couple of plays today. For example, Cade had a really nice big play-- took a sack. That’s purple jersey syndrome-- once he gets hit a couple of times, he will get rid of it.”

“D.J. played pretty clean procedurally. He had one play he’d like to have back. But procedurally, he did great with all that. He made a couple of plays with his legs. Then, Cade, he’s a problem in the pocket because he’s really, really fast. It’s awesome because he can really create-- it’s good for Clemson, but it’s also good for our defense to see some speed like that because he can really really run.”

On where D.J. has progressed:

“Just his creativity. He’s made a lot of plays with his legs in camp. I’ve told him three, four, five times, ‘Wouldn’t have made that play last year, kiddo.’  Because he’s just moving so much better. Lots of confidence. So that’s the No. 1 thing. So he’s really done a good job there. Secondly, just leadership. Not just for the offense but for the team. He’s really worked on his timing and fundamentals, his rhythm. He’s not taking sacks. The biggest thing last year with him was that he took too many sacks and he turned the ball over. Those are two things that we can control.”
