The Storylines

Clemson and NC State battle in a matchup of Top 10 teams for the first time in the history of the Textile Bowl.

Clemson enters the contest having won 36 games in a row at Death Valley, dating to a loss to Pitt on Nov. 12, 2016. A 37th consecutive home win on Saturday would tie the ACC record set by Florida State from 1992- 2001, as Miami's FBS-record 58-game home winning streak from 1985-94 predated the Hurricanes joining the ACC in 2004. Clemson would also tie Florida State and two different Yale runs (1900-03 and 1904-08) for the 11th-longest home winning streak in FBS history.

Despite facing criticism in 2021 and facing doubt in early 2022, Clemson's offense is producing points at a near-historic pace this season. Clemson has scored 175 points through four games, tied for the second-most in the first four games of a season in school history and outpacing recent high-flying Clemson offenses with school legends Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne.

NC State has won the toss and will defer until the 2nd half. DJU and the Clemson offense will take the field first.

Antonio Williams with the quick slant for the first down. Tigers are in the red zone on the first drive.

20-yard FG by B.T. Potter is good. That's a 12-play, 72 yard drive to open the contest that stalls in the red zone. Clemson takes a 3-0 lead here in the first.

Would have liked the TD there, but offense is showing it's not intimidated. Looked a lot like last week.

Would've like to have seen the Tigers punch it in for 7 there. Had it first and goal from the 3.

Wow. Devin Leary converts a 3rd and long to Thayer Thomas for a first down. Great throw there.

RJ Mickens was late on the deep ball at safety and Devin Leary and NC State have it down near the goal line. It's third and goal with 90 seconds to play in the first quarter.

So NC State can't score a touchdown in the red zone either. A 15-play, 78 yard drive ends in a field goal. We are tied at 3 with just seconds left in the first.

Based on how the secondary lined up, a little surprised at QB draw there for State. I get it in theory, but seems like you could have run a little crosser in there for an easy 6.

Agreed. A quick screen may have worked as well for State too.

END 1Q: Clemson 3, NC State 3

Two long drives that resulted in field goals. Clemson has it when play resumes.

Tigers go 3-and-out as NC State will have excellent field position as the Tigers are back on defense.

KJ Henry knocks the ball down on third down as the Pack can't do anything with it. We remain tied at 3 with 13:14 left to play before the half.

Clemson with a false start penalty backs them up. Tigers now facing 3rd and 11 with 6:11 left before the half.

Vann comes with the pressure forces DJU to throw it before he wanted to. Would've been a touchdown to Antonio Williams.

B.T. Potter knocks through the 47-yard FG to give Clemson the lead back at 6-3 with 5:47 to play before the half. I'm liking the shots that the Tigers are taking downfield.

The offense is right there. One or two plays off of Clemson having two TDs on the board.

Doesn't look like targeting to me for Andrew Mukuba.

And Mukuba is out for targeting. He lowered his head and you can see how his body reacted on the TV broadcast at home. Pack on the move now with 4:18 to play before the half. Toriano Pride will take Mukuba's place. Clemson leads 6-3.

Lawton and I are having some trouble with press box WiFi in Clemson - but we just got internet back (hopefully)!

Some first quarter thoughts:
- That felt like a quick period, with each team having one drive a piece. Both looked promising but ended with field goals.
- Tyler Davis set the tone with a play in the backfield early. Myles Murphy, KJ Henry, and Ruke Orhorhoro have helped the Tigers defensive front look like one of the nation's most dominant, as was expected leading into this season.
- The defense has bent, but not broken. #88 Devin Carter made a big snag downfield that set NC State up for the field goal.

Touchdown NC State. Perfect play call from Tim Beck on the play action to the tight end. He was wide open. Wolfpack takes the lead at 10-6 with 1:51 to play before the half.

NC State will get the ball to start the 2nd half so you'd like to see Clemson get something here.

Some notes on that Mukuba targeting call:

"The NCAA states that targeting occurs when a player goes after their opponent with forcible contact. This rule means that players in college football can't make violent contact with the crown of the helmet or contact a defenseless player's head or neck area."

Mukuba did hit with the crown of his helmet, prompting the call and his ejection from the game.

That quote is from: https://thestadiumreviews.com/blogs/info/what-is-targeting-in-football/#:~:text=The%20NCAA%20states%20that%20targeting,player's%20head%20or%20neck%20area.

they have a great piece on targeting if you want to dive deeper into the current details of the rule.

Will Shipley appears to have scored but his knee is down about a yard short. The play is under review. Shipley has been bottled up for most of the first half. He had a 12-yard run on the play before.

Shipley had flashbacks to Pitt and wasn't gonna drop that one.

Dabo is LIVID with the officials on the sidelines. He's still letting them have it - even after the Shipley play that is ruled down now at the one yard line.

HALF: Clemson 13, NC State 10

Tigers have scored on 3 out of the 4 possessions of the first half. Let's see if they can keep things rolling and find a little bit more consistency in the second half.

On defense, one thing to watch will be the secondary with Mukuba out and if Devin Leary and the Pack offense will want to take more shots down field.

That's one heck of a drive from Clemson!

They finish off the half on a strong note. DJ has battled today and ends the drive with a one yard TD run. DJ spread the ball around well from sideline to sideline. The Tigers put together their best overall drive thus far, when they needed the momentum heading into halftime.

Myles Murphy and Barrett Carter with two sacks on the drive force NC State to go 3-and-out on the opening drive of the second half. Impressive start for the Tiger defense.

DJU and the offense take over now with 13:28 to play in the third, leading 13-10. They would've had solid field position if it weren't for Luke Price's block in the back.

Nice leaping catch from Jake Briningstool and a great back shoulder throw from DJU on a 12-yard TD reception.

Tigers increase the lead 20-10 here in the third.
