The Storylines

Clemson and NC State battle in a matchup of Top 10 teams for the first time in the history of the Textile Bowl. 

Clemson enters the contest having won 36 games in a row at Death Valley, dating to a loss to Pitt on Nov. 12, 2016. A 37th consecutive home win on Saturday would tie the ACC record set by Florida State from 1992- 2001, as Miami's FBS-record 58-game home winning streak from 1985-94 predated the Hurricanes joining the ACC in 2004. Clemson would also tie Florida State and two different Yale runs (1900-03 and 1904-08) for the 11th-longest home winning streak in FBS history.

Despite facing criticism in 2021 and facing doubt in early 2022, Clemson's offense is producing points at a near-historic pace this season. Clemson has scored 175 points through four games, tied for the second-most in the first four games of a season in school history and outpacing recent high-flying Clemson offenses with school legends Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne.

You can see the difference in the offense with DJU being able to run the ball and especially the tight ends in the passing game, like we saw last week against Wake Forest.

Nate Wiggins nearly had a pick six on the out route. But it's a first down for NC State. RJ Mickens is down as we have an injury timeout on the field.

Clemson leads 20-10 in the third.

The 49-yard field from Dunn with 9:06 to play in the third cuts Clemson's lead to 20-13. That cuts into a 14-0 run from the Tigers.

There's some nice penetration from Clemson on NC State's FG attempt - but the Wolfpack connect on the field goal to cut Clemson's lead to one score, at 20-13.

This Clemson defensive line has brought the heat tonight. Ruke Orhorhoro brought it there and Clemson is back on offense after missing the field goal.

First bad throw that I've seen from DJU tonight right there. Joseph Ngata couldn't even turn to find the ball. Tigers will be forced to punt here with 3:55 to play in the third, leading 20-13.

Toriano Pride picks off Devin Leary off the tip drill. The first turnover of the night is a big one with a little under 2 1/2 minutes to play in the third. Clemson leads 20-13.

The defense has come to play in the second half! TORIANO PRIDE JR. brings in the interception in a momentum-turning play. If Clemson scores a touchdown here- it could be the turning point that flips this game in the Tigers' direction for good.

Nate Wiggins comes up with the deflection on 3rd and long and forces NC State to punt. The defensive line has harassed Devin Leary throughout the evening. Secondary is playing much better tonight as well.

Clemson up 23-13 with 11:49 to play in the contest. Feels like another score will put this one away.

The ball is snapped from NC State before Devin Leary was ready for it on 4th down and Clemson takes over with 7 minutes to play in the contest, up 10.

Really liked that play call from Brandon Streeter. Roll DJU out of the pocket to the left, got one block and he was gone for the touchdown. Tigers are cruising up 30-13 with 3:04 to play.

There's some more tip drill action from the Clemson defense. A roughing the passer call takes away the Tigers INT from Maguire.

Herbstreit just said it "They're getting there without blitzing". I'm impressed with the work Goodwin has done with the defense this week. Also impressed with his playcalling (for the most part). He's learned our D can get pressure without stacking the box and now he's giving our young secondary help in coverage.

Devin Leary scores on the QB draw to cut Clemson's lead to ten here with 53 seconds left in the contest. Tigers will be able to knee it out as NC State didn't recover the onside.

Clemson's won 37 consecutive home games, which is the longest streak in the country. They have tied FSU for most consecutive home wins in ACC history.

FINAL: Clemson 30, NC State 20

The story of this game to me was the Clemson defense, who was much maligned after surviving Wake Forest last week. They held the NC State offense to 245 yards and the offense outscored the Pack, 27-7 after NC State took the lead in the second quarter. Saw lots of good things in the passing game from the tight ends again and DJU managed the offense very well tonight.

Next up: Clemson hits the road for the next two contests, starting next Saturday night against Boston College.
