First Impressions

You know what they say about first impressions-- make a good one, and clearly five-star freshman defensive tackle Peter Woods has left a mark on the Tigers' coaching staff early in his career.

During the spring, the media had the opportunity to meet with head coach Dabo Swinney, who spoke highly of Clemson's freshman defensive linemen. Among them, Woods appears to be excelling and standing out from the rest. Swinney even made comparisons to former five-star recruits Christian Wilkins and Bryan Bresee, as Woods is already making a name for himself on the gridiron.

In an interview, Swinney stated, "I'd say (Peter) is ahead of them. Both of those guys (Christian and Bryan) played at really small schools. Peter's one of the strongest kids on the team right now."

Swinney's comments reflect the belief that Woods is already more advanced as a football player than his predecessors were at the same stage in their careers.

The Tigers have a storied history of producing exceptional defensive linemen, and it seems they have another rising star in their midst. Standing at an imposing 6'3" and weighing 270 pounds, Woods brings a combination of size, athleticism, and versatility that has caught the attention of coaches and fans alike.

Hailing from Alabaster, Alabama, Woods arrived at Clemson with an outstanding high school resume that included being named the 2022 Maxpreps Alabama Player of the Year and career statistics of 260 tackles, 72 tackles for loss and 29.5 sacks.

Displaying impressive athletic ability across multiple positions on the defensive line, Woods showcased his versatility by excelling both in an edge role in a two-point stance and with his hand on the ground in various defensive fronts. This adaptability has allowed him to disrupt opposing offenses from different angles and positions, making him a valuable asset to the Clemson defense.

One of the factors that sets Woods apart is his experience playing at the highest level of high school football in Alabama. Having competed in 7A football, the most competitive division in the state, Woods thrived in high-pressure situations at Thompson High School. His performance in five state championships, winning an impressive four in a row, speaks volumes about his ability to rise to the occasion and perform consistently.

He continued his stellar play in two post prep all-star games. In December, at the 36th Annual Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic in Mobile, AL, where he teamed with Clemson classmate Christopher Vizzina, Woods earned MVP honors with eight tackles (seven for a loss) and two sacks to help lead Alabama to a 14-10 victory. In January, he was credited with three tackles (two for a loss) and a pass deflection (intercepted by a teammate) in the prestigious Under-Armour All American game in Orlando, FL. 

Furthermore, Woods finished with a team-high seven tackles (one for loss) and a sack for the Orange team in the Orange and White Spring game on April 15.

When asked about Woods' potential, Swinney didn't hold back. "He has all those things that you love about Bryan and Christian and all that," Swinney said.

Clearly, the coaching staff sees tremendous promise in Woods and recognizes his ability to make a significant impact on the field. 

As Clemson prepares for another run at the College Football Playoff, the emergence of Woods boosts their already formidable defensive line. With his combination of size, athleticism, and versatility, Woods can potentially disrupt offensive schemes and create havoc in opposing backfields. His strength and football IQ are already earning him praise from his coaches and teammates, setting the stage for an exciting career in orange and white.

As Woods continues to develop and refine his skills under the tutelage of Nick Eason and Lemanski Hall, fans can expect to witness his growth and impact on the field.

Clemson faithful will undoubtedly keep a close eye on Woods as he seeks to build upon the legacies left behind by the likes of Wilkins and Bresee, and perhaps etch his name alongside them as one of the program's all-time greats.
