During his time with the media today, Dabo Swinney told us that safety Tyler Venables would be redshirting due to a hip labrum tear which he had repaired yesterday. The decision to redshirt Venables, son of former defensive coordinator Brent Venables, is a blow to the team but could benefit the Tigers down the road.
“He’s made the decision that he really wants to use all of his eligibility,” Swinney said of Venables’ desire to extend his college career.
Swinney said the plan will be reminiscent of the approach the Tigers took with linebacker James Skalski in 2018. This should allow Venables to recover fully from his surgery and potentially make a return for a few games toward the end of the season, where his experience would be a huge benefit for the defense.
Swinney said, “I know it feels like he’s been here a long time, but he’s got three years to play two,” speaking of Venables’ timeline.
In his time with Clemson, Venables has showcased his defensive prowess and made a notable impact on the field. Despite limited starts, he has contributed significantly to the team's success. Over the course of 34 games, Venables has amassed 98 tackles, including 5.5 tackles for loss. He has also recorded a sack, an interception, and seven pass breakups, highlighting his versatility and ability to disrupt opposing offenses. Venables' consistent contributions have made him a valuable asset to the Tigers' defense.
While the redshirt decision for Venables may initially be disappointing for both him and Clemson fans, it provides an opportunity for him to fully recover from his injury, help out late the season, and come back stronger for the 2024 campaign.
