The Storylines

Clemson will look to rebound from a disappointing season debut when the Tigers return home to Death Valley on Saturday, Sept. 9, for the team's home opener against the Charleston Southern Buccaneers. Kickoff at Memorial Stadium in Clemson, S.C., is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. ET.

Clemson dropped its season opener at Duke, 28-7, on Labor Day evening. Clemson outgained Duke, 422-374, and led the Blue Devils in first downs, 29-17, hitting several additional statistical markers typically correlated with winning.

"Honestly, in all my years of football, I've never been a part of a game like that ever," Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney said following the game. "I've been here at Clemson a long time. Since I've been a head coach, we were 58-0 when we rush for 200 [yards] and pass for 200 [yards]. That's usually a pretty good indicator, and I think in Clemson history, we were 108-0 [when hitting 200 yards in both categories] — never lost ever. But you've got to finish and obviously we did not do that.

"So many opportunities. [We were] on the one-yard line a couple times. Went 1-for-4 in the red zone, a few turnovers, a couple low blocked kicks... Twice, first-andgoal from the one and didn't get any points. It's really, really disappointing, and really nothing

Good afternoon everyone! Clemson and Charleston Southern are to get going here in about 20 minutes. I know we've had weather delays across the Carolinas with Wake Forest and NC State. Wake is on the ACCN right now. Not sure where the Clemson game will start.

Much better start for Clemson defensively. CSU goes 3-and-out and Barrett Carter made a great tackle. Tigers will have it near the 20. Midway through the first quarter -- 9:26 to play with Clemson up 7-0.

TD Charleston Southern. Cade Klubnik again having trouble with the exchange on a 4th and 1 and CSU scores one play later. We are tied at 7 with 8 minutes to play first quarter.

CSU recovers the onside kick but can't do anything with it.

Tigers will start deep in their own territory at the 1 yard line. Game is tied at 7 with 6:22 left.

67-yard Pick six for Charleston Southern. My goodness. Klubnik with an awful decision. Just have to take the sack there.

Charleston Southern leads Clemson 14-7 with 2:35 to play in the first.

Clemson responds with a 7 play, 57 yard drive. Tigers score in the red zone with a 1-yard Phil Mafah TD. Beaux Collins with a key catch on the out route.

We are tied at 14 with 14 seconds left in the first.

Three red zone possessions. Three touchdowns for Clemson.

Antonio Williams just picked up his second TD of the game on the screen on a 5-yard TD. Clemson retakes the lead at 21-14.

HALFTIME: Clemson 24, Charleston Southern 17

First 30 minutes are in the books for the Tigers in what has been an interesting first half. Clemson has been pushing the ball down the field with 265 yards of total offense, but it's still not as clean as you would like to see. CSU will get the ball to start the second half.

Clemson with a 3-and-out and then a quick 5 play drive that took less than 2 minutes to begin the third quarter.

Phil Mafah punches it in from 5 yards out to increase the Tigers' lead to 31-17 with 10:51 to play in the third quarter.

Clemson scores 42 unanswered points in the second half to pull away from the visitors from Charleston. There is a lot to build on from the second half which can help build confidence for next week against Florida Atlantic at 8 p.m.

The most important thing for the Tigers is they are in the win column for the first time in 2023. Let's see what happens from here.
