The Storylines

Clemson will wrap up the 2020 abbreviated schedule with a rare December regular-season finale against the Virginia Tech Hokies in Blacksburg this evening. Clemson has played 1,218 regular-season games in its 125-season history, posting a 734-439-45 record in those contests. However, only six of those 1,218 regular-season games have been played in the month of December.

Last week marked the return of quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who completed 26-of-37 passes for 403 yards and two touchdowns and no interceptions in his first game action in 5 weeks. The Heisman candidate improved to 32-1 as a starter, tying the Clemson record for wins by a starting quarterback and improving his career winning percentage to .970, the best by an FBS quarterback with at least 30 starts since Division I split in 1978.

Lawrence was trying to get it to Braden Galloway in the back of the endzone and Divine Deablo baited him into throwing a pick and the Tigers come up empty after starting near midfield. Tigers still lead 17-10 with 5:30 to go in the third. This is a strange game.

That pick reminds me of the interception Watson threw against Pitt back in 2016. With a FG, in that one it's OVER....I think tonight would have been just about over with any points there.

Defense needs to make a play here.

The read option for Trevor Lawrence has been working well tonight and he uses it for another rushing touchdown and Clemson extends the lead to 24-10 with 4:45 left in the third quarter.

It's a scoop and score for Derion Kendrick as he runs 66 yards the other way for the score after a bad snap for Hendon Hooker, who just re-entered the game for the first time since the first half. Clemson extends the lead to 31-10 with 1:28 to go in the third quarter.

Cornell Powell makes up for the drop on the first play of the drive as VT puts 8 in the box and makes the connection from Trevor Lawrence for 65-yard bomb for a touchdown. Tigers are pulling away leading 38-10 with 10:16 to go in the 4th quarter.

Clemson clinches a spot in the ACC Championship and a rematch with Notre Dame on Dec. 19 at 4 p.m. in Charlotte with a second half surge to defeat Virginia Tech 45-10.

Quick postgame thoughts:
  • Tigers' defense was opportunistic throughout the night forcing 4 turnovers and hopefully James Skalski and a few other guys on defense healthy before the showdown 2 weeks from tonight.
  • With tonight's win, Trevor Lawrence has 33 wins, the most wins by a Clemson starting quarterback and he had a solid night in the run game with two scores with the read option game. Lawrence will get a chance to play in the game he didn't get to against the Fighting Irish.
