Clemson’s quarterback room enters spring practice with a brand new look and is trying to reset after an underwhelming 2025 season that led to major staff changes on offense.
After the Tigers closed Cade Klubnik’s final season with a 22-10 loss to Penn State in the Pinstripe Bowl, Clemson moved on from offensive coordinator Garrett Riley on Dec. 29, 2025.
That decision followed a season in which Clemson’s offense failed to meet expectations and Klubnik’s numbers fell well below his 2024 production. Klubnik threw for 2,943 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2025 after posting 3,639 yards and 36 touchdowns the year before.
Now, with Chad Morris back in charge of the offense, Clemson is using spring practice to install a new system and establish a new tone in the quarterback room.
“I think everybody, you know, I mean, Chad, as you all know, he’s a fireball every day, all day,” Swinney said. “So I think just them getting used to kind of his personality and just his mode of operation, that’s a big part of what we’re trying to do.”
Swinney said the transition has been an adjustment for the entire room.
“It’s new to all of them. But it’s been fun. They’ve handled it well, and I think we’ve got a good group,” Swinney said.
As expected in the early stages of spring, the quarterbacks are still working through mistakes as Clemson installs Morris’ scheme.
“They’ve all been impressive. They’ve all made mistakes,” Swinney said. “But it’s a good group. It’s a really good room.”
Swinney added that nothing from the first five practices has changed his view of the position group, which features Christopher Vizzina, Chris Denson, and Tait Reynolds as the likely challengers for the top spot.
“There’s nothing that’s happened in five days that makes me think anything different than what I said in the very beginning,” Swinney said. “I think we’ve got a really talented room, very competitive. We’ve got a long way to go.”
With Riley gone and Morris now tasked with jump-starting the offense, Clemson’s spring quarterback storyline is no longer about maintaining momentum from a big year. It is about rebuilding confidence, accelerating development, and finding whether the Tigers can be more efficient and explosive than they were in Klubnik’s final season.
