No. 6 Clemson Welcomes No. 22 Virginia Tech in ACC Clash

Clemson, S.C. – The sixth-ranked Clemson men’s soccer team returns to the pitch at Historic Riggs Field for an ACC match against No. 22 Virginia Tech on Saturday, Oct. 5th. The home match will be the first for the squad since Sept. 20, with the team going 2-1 while partaking in three road matches. The team comes into the match having dominated their opponents on their home field, going undefeated through their first six home games and outscoring opponents by a 27-5 margin.

Series Notes:

The two teams enter the 15th edition of the match Saturday night, with the Tigers leading the series, 7-3-4.

Saturday night’s match will only be the second time the two sides meet while both being ranked in the top 25 nationally.

Head Coach Mike Noonan has led his team against the Hokies six times prior, going 4-0-2 through the contests. 

The first time the two sides met was on Nov. 21, 2003, with the sides tying at 3-3 in Blacksburg, Va.

The last time out was on Sept. 23, 2016, with Clemson winning 2-1 on the road.

Clemson has outscored the Hokies by a 25-20 margin.

Clemson Notes:

Clemson slotted into the 6th position in the United Soccer Coaches poll earlier this week. 

Clemson University is in its third week of being the only school in the country to have both soccer programs and their football program ranked within the top 10.

Head Coach Mike Noonan earned his 100th win against Furman on Sept. 17th, as the Tigers won the match 2-0. Noonan’s 100th win came on the same field where his first win was earned. His first win was on Sept. 22, 2010, with the Tigers winning 1-0 in overtime over the Furman Paladins.

This is the program’s best start to a season since 1998, when the team opened the year 5-1 and then accumulated 17-straight wins.

14 different players have scored for the Tigers this season, with 15 different players contributing an assist or more. Out of the 15 assist contributors, only three have logged one assist.

The team leads the country in goals scored, accumulating 38 goals through their first ten games.

As a team, Clemson leads the country in nine major categories.

Virginia Tech Notes:

The Hokies have been on the hunt for their first conference win, having gone 0-2-1 in ACC play through their first three matches.

Virginia Tech is led in scoring by Kristo Strickler with eight goals.

Nick Blacklock leads the team with five assists logged.

Mathijs Swaneveld has been the mainstay in goal for the Hokies, appearing in nine games and holding a 6-2-1 record.

Virginia Tech is led by Head Coach Mike Brizendine, who is in his eleventh season at the helm in Blacksburg, Va.
