The Storylines

The news broke on Thursday night that quarterback Trevor Lawrence tested positive for COVID-19 and will not play in this afternoon’s contest against the Boston College Eagles. This means freshman QB D.J. Uiagalelei will get the start against new Boston College coach Jeff Hafley’s squad. Hafley coached against Clemson in the 2019 Fiesta Bowl as the defensive coordinator at Ohio State before coming to Chestnut Hill.

A Clemson win today over the Eagles would give the Tigers four wins in a single month for only the second time in school history, joining the time period of September 2011, when the Tigers opened the year with four straight home wins as they won their first ACC Championship in 20 years at the time.

Travis Etienne enters today’s contest 43 yards away from becoming the ACC’s all-time leading rusher and breaking the record held by NC State’s Ted Brown (4,602 from 1975-78).

Another big catch from D.J. to Travis Etienne. I've been really impressed with Etienne's pass catching out of the backfield this year.

D.J. Uiagalelei is putting on a show and has thrown for 301 yards and just threw a touchdown to Amari Rodgers. The two point conversion is no good but the Tigers only trail now by 2 with 6:16 to go in the third quarter.

It's been great to see this team fight through the adversity. Big series here on defense.

We have ourselves a ball game. That opening really puts the pressure back on BC

Back to back punts inside the 5-yard line are negated by penalties.

And a block in the back penalty will force Clemson to work for it on this next drive as we close in on the 4th quarter.

Travis Etienne is now the ACC's all-time leading rusher with that run, taking that spot from NC State's Ted Brown from 1975-78.

We are at the end of the 3rd quarter and Boston College leads No. 1 Clemson, 28-26. Stay tuned for what should be an exciting 4th quarter.

Cornell Powell with another big catch continuing his huge day. What a burst from Travis Etienne to punch it in and give Clemson its first lead of the afternoon from 17-yards out. A great assist by the OL as well as it was wide open.

Clemson trailed by 18 and have come all the way back. Some bad clock management, however and they've had to burn two timeouts now on the two point attempt. And B.T. Potter misses the extra point and had never missed one. Clemson leads 32-28 with 11:34 to play in the game.

Not a fan of the coaching performance today. No need to chase points right now. Not to mention wasting timeouts

3 straight passes and Etienne didn't get the ball once on that last drive. Would like to note that he's averaging 4 yards a carry.

A roughing the passer penalty negates an interception and it will likely be targeting for Xavier Thomas.

Targeting is confirmed and XT is disqualified and since it happened in the second half, he can't play in the first half next week against ND.

Good to see Jurkovic get up and walk off the field by his own power. That was a big body coming down hard on top of him

Here's the play of the game right here guys: 4th and 9 for Boston College, trailing 32-28 with 2:27 left.

BC overthrows the ball by a mile and Clemson leads and is facing 3rd and 1 (and they will get two shots at it) with a chance to put this game away.

BC, backed up in their own end of the field with 96 yards to go for the win, can't get it done. Bryan Bresee sacks Phil Jurkovec and forces a safety. 34-28 Clemson here with 1:18 to go in the game. Clemson can simply run it out now (gotta get the onside kick first).

No. 1 Clemson survives Boston College, 34-28. That was the largest comeback at home since 1966.

Quick postgame thoughts
  • This game was full of well, everything. A true freshman quarterback replacing a Hesiman frontrunner, penalties, questionable clock management and other mistakes but the Tigers found a way to overcome the adversity trailing by 18. DJU put on a show throwing for 342 yards and 2 touchdowns and he ran for another one. He also looked impressive when he ran on the QB power runs and the zone read.

  • Clemson's defense, which looked rough, to say the least giving up plays in the secondary and allowing BC to score 28 points and put up 209 yards in the first half, shut down BC's offense in the second half shutting them out and holding them to 66 yards of total offense in the second half. Impressive showing in the second half from Brent Venables' group.

  • I feel like this week's game and last week's game is what you can use to really grow your team and teach off of, especially with next week's showdown with Notre Dame (7:30, NBC) on the horizon.
