The Storylines

Even in the midst of an abbreviated 2020 college football schedule due to COVID-19, one thing remains the same for the second consecutive year. Clemson and Ohio State are two of the four best teams in the country and they meet again for the second consecutive year, this time in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.

Clemson defeated Ohio State in 2019, 29-23 in the Fiesta Bowl before losing in the national title game to LSU in New Orleans. However, this year presents some interesting parallels. Clemson defeated Ohio State 31-0 in 2016 in the Fiesta Bowl before defeating Alabama in the national title game, which was played in Tampa, Fla.

With a win tonight, Clemson will advance to the national title game for the third straight year, this time it would be in the state of Florida at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla., looking for redemption like they did to end the 2016 season.

Spend this evening’s game with us in this thread! Brandon Stockdale will be holding down the fort along with the rest of the CST Staff.

Good evening and Happy New Year everyone! Clemson and Ohio State are about to kickoff in a little over an hour in the second game of the day to decide who will play Alabama in the national championship, who is leading Notre Dame 31-7 early in the 4th quarter.

Something has to give tonight in New Orleans. Clemson hasn't won in the Big Easy since 1981 and Ohio State hasn't beat Clemson. This should be a fun one tonight.

That was a smooth first drive from Clemson. Liked the Tigers' approach on that first drive going to the outside and attacking the Ohio State secondary right away. Trevor Lawrence keeps it on the ground and it's 7-0 Clemson with 12:10 to go in the first quarter.

Joseph Charleston is taking Nolan Turner's place as Turner is out for the first half due to the targeting call against Notre Dame.

And Ohio State goes 3 and out as the Justin Fields power play goes nowhere. Clemson gets the ball back.

Lawrence misses what would've been a touchdown to Davis Allen but give Ohio St. credit for getting pressure which affected the throw. Both teams have now been forced to punt at least once.

Need to remember that 3rd down play call and see if we can run it again later with success

That didn't take long. Clemson did not get lined up quick enough and the Buckeyes run the stretch play to perfection for a 32-yard TD from Trey Sermon, the Oklahoma transfer and we are tied at 7 with 7:59 to go in the first in the Superdome in New Orleans.

Great to see Frank Ladson back in action for the first time in a while on that touchdown. Liked the mix of pass plays on that drive as well. Travis Etienne punches it in from 3 yards out and the Tigers are back in front at 14-7 with 5:01 left in the opening quarter.

Justin Fields and the Ohio St. offense is making it look easy right now against the Clemson defense and executing well. Fields to Farrell for an 8-yard TD catch and we are tied at 14 with 1:36 to go in the first quarter. Back and forth affair right now in the Big Easy.

Clemson goes 3 and out and will punt. Good series there for the Buckeye defense as we come to the end of the first quarter tied at 14 all.

Justin Fields is on it tonight. He is 8 for 9 for 145 yards and 2 touchdowns. He rolled to his left and the tight end moved to the right and no one from Clemson picked him up. That's a 17-yard TD strike and Ohio State has their first lead of the night at 21-14 with 10:35 to go. Tigers are on their heels after the initial stop to begin the game.

I'll say this, Ohio State is here to play. They weren't just going to hand it over. I thought Clemson's defense would cause them more issues, but that just hasn't been the case so far.

Gotta stiffen up on defense and force a few turnovers.

Tyler Davis is shaken up on that play and that's not what you want to see for the Clemson defensive line. Ohio State is driving once again following a big Trey Sermon run and doing pretty much whatever they want right now. It's 21-14 Buckeyes with 9:37 to go before the half.

Justin Fields hit hard on the play by James Skalski on a 3rd down run. He gets up on his own power and for the second year in a row, he is ejected for targeting similar to Ohio State's Shaun Wade when he was ejected for the hit on Trevor Lawrence last year. Huge loss for Clemson's defense.
BradyH

Tough loss for the Clemson D with Skalski gone for the game.

Gonna be even harder now without their leader. Venables is going to have a lot of adjustments to make at halftime.

And Fields comes right off the bench and hits Chris Olave for a 9-yard touchdown. What a play. Buckeyes up 28-14 as it has been all Ohio State in the second quarter. Clemson has to get something going on offense to give the defense a rest and get some points on the board here before the half. 5:12 to go.

The loss of Skalski is bad, but that rule is awful. I mean he's trying to make a tackle in the open field.

The Buckeyes smell blood in the water. Can Clemson answer?

Jeremy Ruckert is putting on a show against the Clemson defense. That's his 2nd touchdown of the night and another Justin Fields strike for a 12-yard TD. 28 unanswered points and Ohio State is up 35-14 at halftime. Ohio State outgained the Tigers 229-34 in the second quarter.

Clemson has a lot of work to do if they're going to have a chance at a national championship against Alabama.

The first two drives of the second half will decide this one.

If Ohio State scores it's a wrap. If Clemson forces a punt and scores, it's a new game.

Sermon has been incredible. Fields has been gutsy. Tight ends have killed Clemson.

Ohio State was driving to blow this game wide open and Clemson's defense comes up with a huge interception in the endzone from Mike Jones Jr. Let's see if the Tigers can cash in on the takeaway and start to make a dent in the deficit, their largest since the 2012 Orange Bowl against West Virginia. 35-14 Ohio State with 11:45 to go in the third.

Clemson had to have that turnover. Sheesh...that was about to be the end.

Now a quick score and stop and things feel different.

Cornell Powell came up huge on this drive and finishes it off with a 10-yard TD catch and run to cut the Buckeyes lead to 35-21 with 7:56 to go in the third quarter. That's what Clemson needed. Now let's see if they can get a stop.

The long night for the Clemson secondary and Derion Kendrick continues. He gets burned on the deep post for a 56-yard TD catch from Fields to Chris Olave and it's 41-21 Ohio State with the extra point pending.

I think that's a fumble and will be Ohio State football. Lawrence looked like he started to lose the ball when it went into his right hand
