The Storylines

The news broke on Thursday night that quarterback Trevor Lawrence tested positive for COVID-19 and will not play in this afternoon’s contest against the Boston College Eagles. This means freshman QB D.J. Uiagalelei will get the start against new Boston College coach Jeff Hafley’s squad. Hafley coached against Clemson in the 2019 Fiesta Bowl as the defensive coordinator at Ohio State before coming to Chestnut Hill.

A Clemson win today over the Eagles would give the Tigers four wins in a single month for only the second time in school history, joining the time period of September 2011, when the Tigers opened the year with four straight home wins as they won their first ACC Championship in 20 years at the time.

Travis Etienne enters today’s contest 43 yards away from becoming the ACC’s all-time leading rusher and breaking the record held by NC State’s Ted Brown (4,602 from 1975-78).

Boston College goes right down the field on the first drive. Zay Flowers beats Derion Kendrick on the back corner on 4 straight completions. It's 7-0 BC not even 2 minutes in.

One play after the pass interference penalty, BC brings the house off the edge and D.J. hits Travis Etienne out of the backfield on the wheel route with a 35-yard TD pass. We are tied at 7 with 10:54.

Clemson's day on defense is off to a rough start:
  • Derion Kendrick is beat on the play action pass play
  • QB Phil Jurkovec makes Jake Venables miss on a third down to get a first down
  • Pass interference on Sheridian Jones leads to a short touchdown run from David Bailey

BC is up 14-7 with 8:41 to go in the first quarter and making it look easy against the Tigers defense right now.

Jackson Carman lost the one-on-one battle there and Clemson is forced to punt.

And.... The Tigers dodge a bullet on the punt return as BC returns it for a touchdown it's called back due to two block in the back penalties. BC is firing on all cylinders right now on offense. Clemson's secondary has got to step it up here.

That looks like a forward pass to me. Greg McElroy on the TV broadcast is saying DJ threw it from the 18 and it landed on the 20.

Not sure why you just don't run D.J. on a QB power there. That play reminds me of the 2011 Orange Bowl against West Virginia and they took it back to the house on a fumble. I don't have to remind you all how that game turned out for Clemson.

Big time response needed from Clemson now.

Clemson is able to put a drive together with a good mix of Travis Etienne catching and running on that drive. He's been a real weapon in the pass game so far this year. It's 21-10 BC with 8:44 to play before the half.

Boston College gets Clemson to jump offsides on a 4th down penalty and then Sillah made an incredible bobbling catch for a touchdown that is confirmed by review.

Jeff Hafley's squad is up 28-10 on the No. 1 team in the country after a 15-play, 72-yard drive that took up 7:42 off the clock. BC taking advantage of Clemson's mistakes.

B.T. Potter knocks through the 50-yard field goal and gets critical points for the Tigers. It's 28-13 BC at the half and Clemson will get the ball to start the second half.
