The Storylines

Even in the midst of an abbreviated 2020 college football schedule due to COVID-19, one thing remains the same for the second consecutive year. Clemson and Ohio State are two of the four best teams in the country and they meet again for the second consecutive year, this time in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.

Clemson defeated Ohio State in 2019, 29-23 in the Fiesta Bowl before losing in the national title game to LSU in New Orleans. However, this year presents some interesting parallels. Clemson defeated Ohio State 31-0 in 2016 in the Fiesta Bowl before defeating Alabama in the national title game, which was played in Tampa, Fla. 

With a win tonight, Clemson will advance to the national title game for the third straight year, this time it would be in the state of Florida at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla., looking for redemption like they did to end the 2016 season.

Travis Etienne was stopped short on 3rd and 1 as we head to the 4th quarter in New Orleans. Clemson trails Ohio State 42-21.

That was a pretty, pretty throw from Fields who is putting on a show with 6 passing touchdowns tonight. This one is all but wrapped up with the Buckeyes up 49-21.

3rd and 16 turns into a touchdown for Cornell Powell, who has been one of the bright spots of the evening. That's a 26-yard TD catch and it's 49-28 Ohio State with 10:42 to play in the game.

Sorry checked out for a few to edit photos for the site.

What's so frustrating at this point is that it's really the defense that's let Clemson down tonight.

The offense would have trimmed it to 35-28 with 10:42 left, instead, those two deep balls are back-breaking and it simply cannot happen.

Ohio State defeats Clemson 49-28 to advance to the national championship against Alabama.

Quick postgame thoughts:
  • Ohio State played their best game of the season tonight, no question about it. Justin Fields put on a show throwing for 22/28 for 628 yards and six touchdowns, which is a Sugar Bowl record. Brent Venables and Clemson's defense, particularly the secondary had no answers for this offense and guys like Chris Olave.
  • Clemson's offense started out fast in the first quarter, but sputtered in the second quarter and could not get anything going in the run game as they only ran for 44 yards on the night. This was another tough night for Travis Etienne in his home state. The offensive line play was not good at all as the Buckeye defensive line harassed Lawrence.

The nightmares in New Orleans continue for Clemson and this one will hurt in the offseason for sure. But the Tigers will use this as fire for the 2021 season when they kick it off in Charlotte against Georgia next season. Clemson finishes the season at 10-2 overall.
