The Storylines

Clemson has gone 21 days without playing a game following last week’s postponement against Florida State. The Tigers are in unfamiliar territory looking to bounce back from a loss, which they suffered three weeks ago against Notre Dame in double overtime. Dabo Swinney is 26-6 in games following a loss and will look to add to the win column this afternoon against Pat Narduzzi and the Pitt Panthers.

This afternoon is Senior Day and Military Appreciation Day. Clemson is attempting to extend its current school record by winning a 28th consecutive game at home and perhaps avenge its only home loss since 2016, a 43-42 loss to Pitt. With a win this week, Clemson’s senior class can become the first Clemson class ever to go undefeated in Death Valley since the facility’s opening in 1942 and can become the first FBS senior class to post a perfect home career record at home since the 2010 Boise State (26-0) and Oklahoma (25-0) seniors. 

Though he is a junior in official eligibility, quarterback Trevor Lawrence is an academic senior and among those eligible to be honored on Senior Day. In his long-awaited return on Saturday, he will attempt to tie the school record with his 32nd career win as Clemson's starting quarterback.

Trevor Lawrence, in his first action in 5 weeks, connects with E.J. Williams which is his first career touchdown catch and he gets the foot down to get Clemson on the board -- it's 7-0 Tigers with 11:36 to play in the opening quarter.

It's clear early that Trevor Lawrence and E.J. Williams have some chemistry. Williams had a big catch on that drive over the middle where he knew he was going to take a shot. Clemson was able to get points out of the drive up 10-0 after the B.T. Potter 46-yard field goal with 9:26 to go.

Clemson runs a flea flicker of their own and Pitt bites on the run fake and Cornell Powell was wide open on the go route for a touchdown. A 43-yard reception and it's all Clemson, 17-0 with 7:35 to play in the opening quarter.

Ok that's gotta be two records in Clemson Football history. Two interceptions within 4-5 plays by our defense in the first 6 minutes of the game. Then we counter Pitt's flea flicker with a flea flicker for a TD 4-5 plays later. I was literally laughing out loud when we did that!

That interception is on the receiver. Throw was decent but Mario Goodrich picked it off. This one could get ugly folks.

Travis Etienne punches it in on a 2-yard TD -- it is 24-0 Clemson with 4:55 left in the first quarter. Tigers are dominating this game in all three phases soundly today and are out with something to prove.

Raise your hand if you had Clemson up 31-0 at the end of the first quarter. This is the highest scoring quarter in school history. I actually feel bad for Pitt because they got matched up with an angry Clemson team.

That field goal tells me the coaches are just trying to keep from being shut out. Not even trying to be competitive. Not a good look if I'm a Pitt player trying to compete.

Chez Mellusi punches it in for a 2-yard rushing TD and it's 38-3 Clemson with 7:59 to play in the second quarter. Running clock in the second half, please. Also, Cornell Powell in his last 3 games has put on a show -- it's his third straight game with 100+ yards receiving.

Jordan Addison makes an incredible catch getting the foot down and shielding himself from Clemson's Joseph Charleston and Pitt cuts the Tigers' lead to 38-10 with 1:13 left before the half. It feels like it's the fourth quarter.

HALFTIME: No. 3 Clemson, 38, Pitt, 10: Trevor Lawrence threw for the second highest yardage total in a half in his career with 302. Tigers just looked flawless in the first half.

Well that's not how you want to start off the second half. Jackson Carman with a holding penalty and Trevor Lawrence fumbles and then Vincent Turner is wide open for a touchdown after the turnover. Clemson leads 38-17 with 14:24 to go in the third.

An incredible diving catch by Amari Rodgers for a touchdown will be wiped off the board by an ineligible receiver down field penalty by Matt Bockhorst. Clemson's offensive line play off to a rough start to begin the second half.
