The Storylines

Clemson has gone 21 days without playing a game following last week’s postponement against Florida State. The Tigers are in unfamiliar territory looking to bounce back from a loss, which they suffered three weeks ago against Notre Dame in double overtime. Dabo Swinney is 26-6 in games following a loss and will look to add to the win column this afternoon against Pat Narduzzi and the Pitt Panthers.

This afternoon is Senior Day and Military Appreciation Day. Clemson is attempting to extend its current school record by winning a 28th consecutive game at home and perhaps avenge its only home loss since 2016, a 43-42 loss to Pitt. With a win this week, Clemson’s senior class can become the first Clemson class ever to go undefeated in Death Valley since the facility’s opening in 1942 and can become the first FBS senior class to post a perfect home career record at home since the 2010 Boise State (26-0) and Oklahoma (25-0) seniors. 

Though he is a junior in official eligibility, quarterback Trevor Lawrence is an academic senior and among those eligible to be honored on Senior Day. In his long-awaited return on Saturday, he will attempt to tie the school record with his 32nd career win as Clemson's starting quarterback.

B.T. Potter misses the 41-yard field goal and it's a three touchdown lead for Clemson with 9:03 left in the third quarter. Clemson led at one point, 38-3. You can definitely tell these guys took their foot off the gas pedal in the second quarter.

The previous play was a nice design on the rail route up the sideline. The officials ruled him Braden Galloway out on the sideline but Travis Etienne punches it in from 3 yards out to cap off a 10 play, 89-yard drive to extend Clemson's lead to 45-17 with 52 seconds to play in the third quarter.

Mario Goodrich is having a day. That's his second interception of Kenny Pickett today to begin the fourth quarter with Clemson leading 45-17.

D.J. connects with Chez Mellusi on the pick play and Mellusi was able to slip out of the backfield for the easy pitch and catch from 9 yards out and Clemson leads 52-17 with 10:48 to go in the 4th quarter.

FINAL: No. 3 Clemson defeats Pitt, 52-17

A few quick postgame thoughts:
  • With the exception of the first few minutes of the third quarter, Clemson played like a ticked off squad who hadn't played in several weeks and was out with things to prove this afternoon in Death Valley. I didn't see 31-0 coming at the end of the first quarter.
  • Speaking of the slow start in the third quarter, I think it's human nature to let off the gas pedal when you're up that much and I'm sure the coaches will use it as teachable moments moving forward.
  • Cornell Powell had his third straight 100-yard game today. This is a guy who could've transferred and gone somewhere else but he stuck it out at Clemson and he's now being rewarded for it. You love that for guys.
  • The defense came up with four interceptions and you could tell Brent Venables group was out with something to prove in how aggressive they were. It was good to see Tyler Davis back today on the defensive front as well. They held Pitt to 14 yards rushing.

Next week, knock on wood and COVID permitting, Clemson will travel to Virginia Tech to wrap up the abbreviated 2020 schedule.

Game time for next week should be announced tonight or tomorrow. I doubt the game against Florida State will be rescheduled. I just don't see the point in rescheduling the game.
