The Storylines

Clemson and Tennessee meet to wrap up the 2022 season on Friday night in South Florida. Tigers freshman quarterback Cade Klubnik will make his first career start against the Volunteers. This is after earning ACC Championship Game Most Valuable Player honors for his sterling performance in reserve against North Carolina. Klubnik will become the first Clemson quarterback to make his starting debut in a postseason game since Clemson abandoned the single-wing offense in favor of the T-formation in 1953.

Since 2022, Clemson quarterbacks are 9-2 in the first career starts with wins by Charlie Whitehurst, Will Proctor, Cullen Harper, Kyle Parker, Tajh Boyd, Deshaun Watson, Kelly Bryant, Trevor Lawrence and DJ Uiagalelei.

B.T. Potter is having a rough night. A 42-yard FG is no good. Another good drive stalls out for the Tigers as the offensive line is just getting manhandled right now. Aaron Beasley with two big plays on that last drive.

Still 7-0 Vols with 10:15 to play before the half.

Touchdown Vols. This after a 50-yard completion from Joe Milton to Squirrel White, leading to a 2-yard TD run.

Tennessee leads Clemson, 14-0 with 9:03 to play before the half. Going to state the obvious, but the Tigers need to get something going and they'll have to shore up their offensive line issues.

B.T. Potter finally connects on the field goal. It's a 31-yard FG on a drive where Clemson needed points. Play of the drive was the Will Shipley hurdle (i.e. Louisville).

14-3 Tennessee with 5:11 to play in the second quarter.

The end of the drive was so weird. Flashbacks of the playcalling during the regular season.

The running game got you close then you abandon it. Such a head scratcher.

I agree Brady. I don't understand that, but at least the offense seems to be more creative tonight.

Tigers are forced to punt and Tennessee will start on their own 25. I like that Brandon Streeter is calling some shots for Cade, but I'd like to see a little more of the run game from the Tigers in the 2nd half.

14-3 Tennessee with 2:55 to play in the half.

True freshman mistake right there. Cade Klubnik takes off and runs and gets hit in bounds with no time left in the first half and the Tigers can't get points before the half.

Shipley only has three carries in the first half. I'd like to see that number rise in the second half. The Tigers best skill player isn't getting enough touches.

I'm happy with CK performance so far. Even happier with the running performance when we actually call run plays.

Still not happy with playcalling. Haven't been happy with that since Street was promoted. I love Dabo but sincerely wish he would be loyal to the program as a whole rather than being loyal to individuals despite the program. Street might be a good dude, but when it comes to play calling he is as useful as a boat anchor.

Phil Mafah had 5 carries in the first half.

Will Shipley had 3.

Clemson comes out and scores on a 40-yard field goal from B.T. Potter. I liked the approach to go to the run game. Shipley got the ball four times on that drive, more than he did the entire first half.
