The Storylines

Clemson will open a season on Labor Day evening for the second straight year when the ninth-ranked Tigers face the Duke Blue Devils on Monday, Sept. 4.

Clemson enters the game as the reigning ACC champions after winning its league-leading 21st all-time ACC title last season. The Tigers are 15-4-1 all-time in conference openers of seasons following ACC titles, which includes wins in conference openers following each of Clemson's six ACC titles from 2015-20.

Clemson opened its 2022 ACC title-winning campaign on Labor Day night a year ago, defeating Georgia Tech, 41-10, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The Tigers' final offensive play was a three-yard touchdown pass by Cade Klubnik, his first career touchdown pass in his first career game.

On Monday, Klubnik is expected to make his first career regular-season start, as last December, he became the first Clemson quarterback since the modernization of Clemson's quarterback position in 1953 to make his first career start in a postseason game.

HALF: Clemson 7, Duke 6

We've got an all out defensive battle in Durham as the offenses have been up and down. The biggest play of the first half was the muffed punt, which led to the Tigers only touchdown of the first half. Clemson with just 167 total yards of offense so far. We'll see if they can open things up. Duke has been bringing it.

To me, this feels like a game where you make one big play, and the floodgates open. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's the vibe I get.

Wow. Clemson can't wrap up on defense and Riley Leonard scores on a 44-yard keeper for a touchdown.

Duke leads 12-7 with 12:40 to play in the third quarter, XP pending.

13-7 Duke now.

Now let's see what this Clemson offense can do. They've been stuck in neutral the majority of the contest.

49 yard rush by Phil Mafah has set Clemson up inside Duke territory. That's the biggest play of the night to this point offensively of the night for the Tigers.

1st & Goal Tigers after a penalty.

Robert Gunn's 23-yard field goal is no good. Tigers come away with nothing after their best drive of the night on offense. Wow.

Another blocked FG (at least it was scored that way)

Wow.

Huge false start after having 1st-and-goal at the 2-yard line.

Another red zone trip and Clemson fumbles on the Q-R exchange on the mesh. Duke takes over on their own 10. Wooo boy.

5:14 to play in the third. Blue Devils lead 13-7.

Goodness.

Huge stop there after another terrible finish to an opportunistic drive.

Tigers take over at their own 40-yard line. Need points here.

END 3Q: No. 9 Clemson trails Duke 13-7.

Tigers are in scoring position when play resumes in the fourth quarter. That wasn't something I'd thought I would type tonight, but here we are.

The most important drive of the game so far is coming up here… would love to see the tight ends (especially Briningstool) get more involved in the center of the field to be a safety blanket for Klubnik.

The red zone struggles continue… my goodness. Ruling on the field is a Clemson fumble lost inside the 10 yard line.

What a nightmare for Clemson in the 2nd half.

Another fumble in the red zone.

Can't win when you can't score in the red zone.

Touchdown Duke. Jaquez Moore scores on the outside run. Two-point conversion is good.

21-7 Devils with 10:33 to play in the contest. Clemson's mistakes have come at the worst times and it is snowballing for the visitors from the Upstate.

Clemson trails 21-7 with 10:33 left in the game. This is where we will find out what Klubnik is made of. He won back to back championships in his final two years at Westlake High School in Texas. He dominated in the ACC Championship game last fall.

The former five-star is in a high-pressure situation again. This is where we will see if he can rise to the occasion in his first regular season start at Clemson.

You can't win when you make this many mistakes… that pick feels like the dagger.

I'm having trouble digesting what I'm watching.

This is gonna take a few shows to work my way through. Holy cow.

Tip drill and a pick for Duke. That pretty much sums up the night for Clemson. Mistake after mistake.

That may do it with under 5 minutes to play in Durham as Devils lead 21-7, getting closer to a Week 1 upset.

Well this was ugly.

Too many missed opportunities. Just punch in that one TD and it's 14-13. Felt like WVU in the Orange Bowl with that momentum turn that took place.

Jordan Waters with the exclamation point for Duke on a 36-yard TD run.

Duke 28, Clemson 7, 3:15 left in the contest. Blue Devils about to knock off the No. 9 team in the country in Week 1.

FINAL: Duke 28, Clemson 7

Way too many mistakes in a nightmare night for the Tigers. The afternoon radio show with Lawton should be interesting conversation the next few days.
